Featured Areas
A. Wadmalaw Island
Wadmalaw Island is an ecologically rich and culturally diverse sea island that supports a healthy agricultural land base, a strong Gullah community and modest development that, for the most part, respects the rural character of the island.
B. Sullivans Island
Sullivans Island is a small, residential island at the mouth of the Charleston Harbor. The accreted beach at Sullivans Island forms a near 80-acre stretch of vegetated dunes, wetlands and white sand beach, which provides unusual habitat and nesting grounds to a wide variety of wildlife species.
C. Ashley River
In addition to serving as an indicator of the changing seasons as its summer green turns to autumnal gold, the marsh also provides strategic, natural buffers and open space to our built environment.
D. Four Holes Swamp
Francis Beidler Forest and adjoining protected lands now comprise a nearly continuous 28-mile ribbon of forested wetland including approximately 1,700 acres of the largest old growth cypress-tupelo swamp forest in the world.
E. Ace Basin
The ACE Basin (Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers) Focus Area encompasses 1.7 million acres of upland and wetland habitat along the coast of South Carolina between Charleston and Beaufort and is one of the largest intact coastal ecosystems on the East coast.
F. Savannah River Preserve
The Savannah River Preserve is a subregion of the South Lowcountry Focus Area. Local landowners have come together in an effort to preserve the landscape and its traditional rural uses.
G. Ashem Farm
Ashem Farm is 55 acres of waterfront property on the Ashley River adjacent to Charles Towne Landing.
