ACE Basin Focus Area

by chris — last modified 02:41 PM, 03 June 2008

Total acres: 17,580

ace_cewThe ACE (Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers) Basin Focus Area encompasses 350,000 acres of upland and wetland habitat along the coast of South Carolina between Charleston and Beaufort.

As one of the largest intact coastal ecosystems on the east coast, the ACE Basin contains six distinct ecosystem habitat types that support nine federally endangered and six federally threatened species, including the bald eagle, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the wood stork. Additionally, the ACE Basin is home to approximately 30 species listed as endangered, threatened or special by the state of South Carolina.

Agriculture and forestry are the primary land-use types within the ACE Basin. The area has experienced high levels of human activity over time, from rice production in previous centuries to extensive timber management in recent years. Because the Ace Basin is an impressive and healthy estuarine system, both commercial and recreational fisheries are important to the local economy.

Established in 1999, the ACE Basin was the first Focus Area organized under the Joint Ventures of the North American Waterfowl Act. Cooperative efforts among landowners, public agencies and private conservation organizations have resulted in the protection of 128,300 acres. The Lowcountry Open Land Trust protects 50 properties, covering 17,580 acres of natural and rural land.

The ACE Basin Task Force includes: Private landowners; S.C. Department of Natural Resources; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; The Nature Conservancy of S.C.; Ducks Unlimited, Inc.; Lowcountry Open Land Trust; S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism; MeadWestvaco; Nemours Wildlife Foundation.
